Peace Corps South Africa
I have had the honor and the privilege of serving in the United States Peace Corps for two years. I thank all the people of South Africa who made me feel welcome in their country not only as a volunteer but as a friend and family. For this I am forever grateful to South Africa. My main mission in South Africa was to be an HIV Outreach Worker working in Utrecht ZA in the beautiful province of Kwazul Natal.
While in South Africa, I worked for an incredible NGO named Genyaneni Community Care Services headed up by a woman named Beryl Oliphant. Beryl is a selfless woman and great leader providing support for those with HIV and the poor. She has an amazing ability to motivate people and one of the most resilient and bravest people I have ever known. While in South Africa I was involved in training 144 Community Health Care workers in HIV, TB, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Stress Management, Elder and Child Abuse. Secondary projects included working in the schools, senior center, private business, prison system and going to projects providing health education for rural areas. This has been a life changing experience and I am so glad I had the opportunity to be part of the Peace Corps. To the left a picture of me with Beryl.
